In 1994 BPMC President Brad Balon chaired his first hospital safety committee. His first meeting lasted 3 hours and made everyone involved very unhappy including Brad. It wasn't that the meeting didn't go well. In fact, from every standard measure aside from the length that first meeting was a resounding success. The problem, Brad concluded, was with the large scope of the Committee combined with the structure of the meeting itself. So Brad set out to find a way to decrease the meeting time without adversely affecting the Committee's output.
The solution was to move most of the effort out of the meeting, and use precious face-to-face meeting time just for group interaction and feedback. From then on Brad's improved safety meetings lasted about 20 minutes and, equally importantly, the committee accomplished more each month than it ever had in the past. But this was 1994 and the internet as we now know it did not exist, so the new approach was limited to teams in close proximity to each other.
In 2007 BPMC began developing and using Outmeet® to manage our internal projects. Outmeet® is a web-based collaboration tool that helps groups of people keep track of and manage lots of tasks. It turns out this is exactly what committees are doing whether they know it or not. But unlike the system Brad created in 1994, Outmeet® is web-based and works equally well for people in the same building or halfway aroud the world.
